The Foundation La main à la pâte has been involved since 2018 in Sudan in the EQUIP project, led by France Education International and Expertise France, and funded by the European Union. It aims to strengthen the pre-service and in-service training of Sudanese teachers in the intermediate cycle.

Objectives

EQUIP I, the first part of the project, ran from 2018 to 2021 and had the main objective of strengthening the pre-service training of Sudanese teachers in order to develop their skills and structurally improve the quality of teaching at the primary education level. The Foundation La main à la pâte was in charge of the science education component by providing specific expertise in training of trainers and production of training modules.

Following the success of EQUIP I, the EQUIP II project was launched in 2022 and aims at continuing to strengthen the pre-service and in-service training of Sudanese teachers. Still in cooperation with the Sudanese government, Expertise France and France Education International, La main à la pâte is involved in the design and implementation of technical support and training for science teachers in all provinces of the country at the intermediate level.

Our work

The Foundation La main à la pâte is responsible for mobilizing expertise in sciences to:

  • Develop specific proposals for science teaching, from the definition of a reference system of competencies to the training of trainers;
  • Strengthen the professional capacities of meta-trainers - trainers of trainers - so that they in turn train teacher-trainers in faculties of education, in charge of pre-service training, as well as managers concerned with the monitoring and evaluation of practicing teachers;
  • Provide support to meta-trainers in the development of training modules;
  • Follow up on the implementation of the training and produce recommendations to improve the practices observed.

The experts involved in this project conducted seven weeks of training workshops between June and September 2022 in Khartoum to sensitize meta-trainers to the inquiry-based approach to science education and prepare them to train other trainers in Sudan. Two follow-up workshops and a training module specifically focused on evaluation are planned for the remainder of the project.
